Is it okay to be friends with someone who's married?

Is it okay to be friends with someone who's married? Would it be disrespectful to be friends with someone who's married? Is it okay for a single girl / woman to be friends with a married man / guy? Is it alright for a single guy / man to be friends with a married woman / girl?

Friendship is one of the deepest bonds one can share with someone whether you're in a relationship with him / her or not. Friendship as with many other things revolves around circumstances and situations and these factor can determine whether or not it's okay to be 'friends' with a certain person.

There are various factors worth considering with regards to whether or not it's okay or morally correct to be friends with someone who's married. Please take note of the fact that 'friends' is used rather loosely and can range from a completely platonic relationship to more of a 'friends with benefits' kind of relationship.

The following are guidelines for what is likely to be acceptable friendship and what isn't. Please know that these are merely guidelines and that depending on the type of person you are, he / she is, the kind of marriage he / she has and you're particular moral views the following guidelines would differ.

You probably should be friends if:
  • You were friends before he / she got married.
  • You've known him / her longer than their wife / husband has.
  • You work / attend school together and have nothing more than a platonic friendship.
  • You're just friends - nothing more and nothing less.
You probably should not be friends if:
  • Either or both of you has romantic feelings for the other.
  • Either or both of you is flirtatious to the other.
  • He / she has hinted at you're relationship becoming more of a 'friends with benefits' kind of relationship.
  • You are made a secret from his/her spouse and he/she hangs out / meets up with you without their spouse knowing.
If you're looking to find answers on whether or not it would be okay for you to be friends with him / her then chances are that deep down you don't feel 100% comfortable doing so.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being friends with someone but if you don't feel completely comfortable doing so there has to be a particular reason for that. Your reason might be one of the above mentioned reasons or something completely different.
You know the situation so you are the only one who is able to make that decision.

If you are still confused with regards to whether or not you should build a friendship with him or her after thinking everything through then remember the saying:

'If in doubt - DON'T!'
