What is Ascension Day? When do we celebrate Ascension day? Who celebrates Ascension day? When is Ascension day this year?
Ascension Day |
Ascension day is a special day on the Christian Calendar. Many denominations in Christianity celebrate this day and value it as being of high importance.
What is Ascension Day?
After Jesus was Crucified during Easter (read more about Easter here) Jesus rose from the dead. For 40 days after that Jesus was still on Earth occasionally visiting His disciples for short periods at a time.
After 40 days Jesus made His last appearance to his disciples telling them that He was going to leave them but promising to soon return ( prophesying the second coming of Christ). Jesus gave His disciples power to heal and forgive in His name through the Power of God. He told them that the Holy spirit would give them the power to heal and forgive and would be on Earth as a helper for them after He'd left. Jesus left earth by Ascending into Heaven on clouds and promised to come again in a similar manner to take all who believe in Him and follow His word to be with Him.
The day Jesus Ascended is know as Ascension day.
When do we celebrate Ascension day?
Ascension day is celebrated exactly 40 days after Easter. Just like the date of Easter changes every year, as does that of Ascension day. This year Ascension day will be celebrated on the 17 May 2012.
The thought of the Ascension of Jesus is a beautiful one and keeping in mind the fact that Jesus will keep His promise and return for all of us who love and believe in Him gives us the strength to keep believing no matter what goes on around us. It encourages us to trust in the words that Jesus will return and to believe in Jesus words when He spoke to His disciples after rising from the dead and said:
"Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." John 20:29
We as Christians are those Blessed ones! "We walk by faith and not by sight" 2 Corinthians 5:7.
We are Blessed and it feels so good to know that! :)
