Why is Jesus referred to as a Shepherd? Why Is Jesus called the Good Shepherd? Is Jesus a Shepherd?
Jesus - The Good Shepherd |
Jesus Is often referred to as a Shepherd or more specifically the Good Shepherd. There are many reasons for this.
In figuring out why Jesus is called a Shepherd it's important to note the similarities between Jesus and a Shepherd especially since the Bible is filled with parables and stories used to get a moral or message across. Alot of the things in the Bible are figurative and Jesus being referred to as a Shepherd are one of these.
Similarities between Jesus and a Shepherd
In John 10:11 Jesus says " "I am the good shepherd." He goes on to say "The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." In this verse Jesus sums up for us why He could be referred to as the Good Shepherd as well as letting us know what He has ultimately done for us!
If Jesus can be named the Good Shepherd we can be likened to being His sheep because just as sheep do to their shepherd we follow Jesus and He leads the way for us throughout life; guiding us, steering us in the right direction, feeding us, etc.
Jesus came to this earth to lay down His life for us (read more about Easter here) and to save us from death and sin. Jesus died in our place therefore just like a Good Shepherd, He laid down His life for us (His Sheep).
It really is a great comparison to think of Jesus as our Shepherd. It allows us to know that Jesus is gentle, a protector and a Saviour and we should look to Him to save us because ultimately, He is the only one who can. He saved us from death and we have redemption and ever lasting life through Him - our Good Shepherd.
